February is not only the month of Valentine’s Day, it is also Heart Awareness Month. Weldon Valley and many other schools around the country are participating in a variety of activities and fundraisers to help raise awareness on heart health.
At Weldon Valley, the elementary specials teachers are coordinating a variety of activities around the heart, how it works and about nutrition and fitness.
In PE, the students are learning to have fun while creating jump rope routines to music. They are raising money for people who have heart problems by participating in the Jump Rope for Heart program.
In art the students are designing a heart and sole painting using the sole of their shoes. This activity is like a letter of commitment to be active during the month of February. The students will also be doing a nutrition lesson the government’s guidelines for “my plate” and the food pyramid. In computers, the students are participating in a variety of online activities designed to help them understand how important nutrition and fitness are to heart health.
The unit will culminate on February 23, when there will be a huge event for the kids to show off their routines and what they have learned. This unit is an all around great unit for the kids because it involves them in not only having fun, but learning about health and nutrition.

Weldon Valley NHS is showing serious dedication towards the 2012 blood drive. The Warriors have held an annual blood drive for many years running now and it has been supported by all of the NHS students. This year’s blood drive is being held in February, but Mr. Vance (the NHS Advisor) is still determining the appropriate date on which the blood drive will be held. Even though the date isn’t set for this event, they know that they will put all of their heart into this drive for better health.
Knowledge bowl is going to be happening soon! February 13th is the date for the high school knowledge bowl held at our own Weldon Valley High School. Mr. Kocer is the knowledge bowl coach and he always has high expectations and hopes for his team. He recently said “I believe the team will go far and hopefully win this year’s bowl.”
He also thinks that Fleming will be the biggest opponent. There are certain rules that are required to have a valid bowl. One room must have 3 teams involved. A single day meet consists of five rounds, one written, four oral. The first round of the meet is a written round that consists of 60 objective questions. The rest of the contest consists of four oral rounds, with exactly 50 questions. They have been practicing for awhile now and we all know that their hard work will pay off the in February!

Boys basketball team aim for positive end of season
30 01 2012Coach Jamie Wood and the boy’s basketball team are working hard to become their best by the end of the season when districts roll around. Their plan is to knock off a really good team like Caliché, Pawnee, Fleming or Haxtun then go step-by-step and make a run at state.
The Weldon Valley boy’s basketball team just came off a major win against Peetz 62-55. Everyone helped a lot in the game against Peetz on January 21 but the key players were Brady and Nathan. Brady had a total of eight defensive rebounds and 10 points on the night and Nathan came out with a five defensive rebounds and 13 points.
Warrior’s team’s thoughts on the game against Peetz were very positive and happy. They were glad to break a losing streak and it’s just good when we beat Peetz.
On Wednesday the January 18 Weldon Valley hosted the number one ranked Caliche Buffaloes which always seems to be a really big game. Unfortunately the turn out of the game was not the best as the Caliche Buffaloes got a win 92-47.
After the game the boys were not down or sad they lost. They were happy they played their hardest and never let down one bit. They say that they have never had so much fun playing Caliche but now they had a great time. The stats for the game include: offense rebounds Brady 2, Nathan 1, Dillon and Devon 3. On the other end of the floor Brady 3, Nathan 3, Jace 3, Dillon 1, and Devon 3. Lead Scorers starting with Nathan 16, Brady 10, Jace 4, Dillon 2, and Devon .

Memorable moments from fall sports
16 11 2011The Weldon Valley Warriors have ended their seasons, both in football and in volleyball. The boys finished with a record of 3-5 and the girls 21-5. The boys played a tough game in Deer Trail against the number one team in the state and had them beat out in the first quarter, but Deer Trail had a slight edge. The girls were favored to go to the state championships, but had an upsetting loss to Pawnee in districts.
The Warrior football team is losing four seniors, three of which started every game. The running back, quarterback, safety, end, and linebacker positions will all have to be replaced. The girls however will have many girls returning for volleyball season next year and will only be losing two seniors. Both volleyball and football had been stopped short of what they thought would be a good year, but there is always next year!
Memories from this year will last forever for those seniors that had their last year of fall sports. Some of the most memorable moments in football were when one player caught an amazing pass in Deer Trail and another said his was when he ran a touchdown on the first play of the season against Idalia. While another senior said his was when he almost ran a kick-off for a touchdown but tripped himself ten yards before the goal line. And last, but not least, one of the most memorable moments were the team dinners! As for volleyball, the lone senior, said she will remember every moment of her volleyball season and will never forget any of her teammates when she moves on to college. Every one of the juniors, sophomores, and freshman are looking forward to their next years of sports and all of us are hoping for a state win!

“We are really connecting as a team,” a senior player added, “and we work well together.”
Practice got underway last weekend with 17 players, but Coach Wood hopes to get that number up to 19.
Some tough teams the Warriors will be facing this year are Caliche, Pawnee, Fleming and Prairie, Wood said. “We have the opportunity to beat Caliche,” said another senior member of the team. “They are a team that has been difficult to beat in the past.”
